Huawei shows us how kick-ass 5G can be

Real-time fight between eSports gamer and kung fu master packs a punch on Weibo.

Huawei has been touting 5G capabilities in its products for some time now. But as often is the case, unless you can visually demonstrate the difference new technology will make, it's hard to translate hype into excitement.

With help from WPP, the Chinese hardware giant has done a noble job breaking down some doors with '5G Kung Fu Showdown', a short film that takes the audience into a new high-impact gaming arena, using the Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s 5G capabilities.

Released last month, the film features a Chinese kungfu master pitted against a Mate 30 mobile gamer in virtual combat. The kungfu master character was equipped with a haptic body vest and positioning tracking system to track his movements for the gamer, while the master cold see real-time attacks from his opponent using Huawei VR Glass.

The high-speed data transfer of the 5G network then allowed them to virtually fight in real-time hundreds of miles away from each other.

“The unfolding 5G era offers an incredible opportunity to rethink the role of smartphones," said WPP global client leader for Team Huawei, Chris Reitermann. It’s in our DNA to push creative boundaries by leveraging technology, and we were thrilled to develop this innovative campaign with Huawei.

Within hours of release, WPP says the work generated a huge response on microblogging site Weibo, with nearly 50 million views on the topic of "Real-Life Ready Player One" and over 50,000 discussions. 

Ad Nut likes the contrast of pitting ancient versus modern, set in the context of technology product cycles. With increasing speed and because of speed, what is modern can very quickly become ancient. This is the potential of 5G, brought to life. It's not like this is the first time we've seen this metaphor, but Ad Nut also just likes a good dust-up now and then.
