June Cheung
Head of JAPAC
Scope3
Australia
Like the overachiever she is, June Cheung gained an engineering degree for the challenge of it. She’s used to challenges in new arenas—particularly as a daughter of immigrant parents and having gone to school in Australia without knowing how to speak English. Out of university, she sought a sales role in tech to marry her strength as a communicator and her technical capabilities.
Fast forward more than a decade later, her Australian dream was realised with a regional director role at Oracle where she was promoted three times in less than four years. She was then scooped by Scope3, a firm aimed at decarbonising media and advertising, to lead the JAPAC region.
Since her appointment at Scope3, Cheung has established three commercial partnerships with Foxtel Media, SBS, and JCDecaux; as well as assisted several clients and agencies to decrease their carbon emissions. For example, Foxtel managed to reduce its display inventory emissions across Foxtel Media by 63%. Across JAPAC, the firm was also the first to get GroupM, Publicis, Dentsu, and IPG to adopt its emissions models into their dashboards, resulting in rapid scaling of the company in Southeast Asia and ANZ.
Cheung is noted for her proactiveness in conceptualising first-in-market products to aid with Scope3’s decarbonising goals. For instance, she pioneered a DOOH measurement product in conjunction with the JCDecaux deal. By addressing market gaps through industry dialogue, she also introduced Climate Shield, a product developed by in-house engineers as a solution to avoid climate risk inventory.
In her spare time, Cheung contributes to The Women in Programmatic Network and is a core part of IAB’s Sustainability Working Group. She regularly authors opinion pieces on sustainable advertising and speaks on stage about the topic at various industry conferences. Internally, Scope3’s CEO entrusted Cheung with the responsibility to oversee the company’s first summit in Sydney, a flagship event with a key product launch and workshops for over 60 attendees.
As a rare woman leader in the tech and media space, Cheung is inclined to hiring women and people who may not always fit in. She often looks back to her days in school as a newly arrived immigrant and those who helped her feel comfortable despite her not speaking English at the time, and strives to make others around her feel the same way.
