Starcom wins Shanghai Jahwa's media in China

SHANGHAI - Starcom Shanghai has won the media duties for domestic personal care products and cosmetics company Shanghai Jahwa in China, in what was believed to be a three-way pitch involving Mediacom and Maxus.

Starcom claims the account could be worth as much as US$100 million. However, other sources close to the pitch suggest the account is worth $25 million.

“Coupled with the strength of Starcom’s full media communication capabilities and a unique set of proprietary tools and applications, we’re confident that this business partnership will help elevate the Shanghai Jahwa brand to greater heights,” said Lily Xu, marketing communications director at Shanghai Jahwa.

Sources at two-year incumbent Mediacom claim the agency was not involved in the pitch, but that it resigned the account in February. A press statement from Mediacom to Media said: “Mediacom and Jahwa have agreed not to renew the contract due to a conflicting client business on similar product categories.”

Sources close to the review also suggest Maxus was involved in early conversations with the brand but declined to pitch for the business as “it became clear it was a very price bidding-based account.”

According to local media reports this month, the brand plans to also establish an overseas subsidiary to handle sales in international markets.
