James Hurman departs Ogilvy Shanghai after less than six months to return to New Zealand

SHANGHAI & AUCKLAND – James Hurman, who joined Ogilvy & Mather Shanghai as planning partner in Q1, has quit and moved back to his home country New Zealand as Y&R’s managing director.

Ogilvy has confirmed his departure. At Y&R New Zealand, Hurman will be partnering with ECD Josh Moore.

As reported in Australian media earlier this month, the appointment of Hurman (pictured) follows the resignation of the agency CEO, Jon Ramage, who is leaving Y&R New Zealand to take time out from the advertising industry.

Hurman was recently ranked among the top two planners in the world by The Directory Big Won Creative Rankings 2011. He is also the author of The Case for Creativity, a book about the link between creativity and effectiveness, published in 2011.

Before relocating from New Zealand to Shanghai to join O&M, Hurman was head of planning at Colenso BBDO Auckland for five years. The agency won 21 Cannes Lions, including two integrated Lions and one of only six inaugural Creative Effectiveness Lions given out in 2011. Under Hurman's guidance, his agency also dominated in effectiveness, winning 41 local and international effectiveness awards for 19 different campaigns, as well as Bests in Show at both the Asian Marketing Effectiveness Awards and New Zealand Effies.
