Creative Minds: Jennifer Tse on the creativity gene and Taylor Swift's marketing genius

The social media manager initially aspired to be a scientist, but her passion for creative work ultimately drew her to follow in her parents' footsteps.

Creative Minds: Jennifer Tse on the creativity gene and Taylor Swift's marketing genius
In Creative Minds, we give APAC creatives a long list of questions from the serious to the silly, and ask them to pick 11 to answer. (Why 11? Just because.) Want to be featured?

Name: Jennifer Tse

Origin: Hong Kong

Places lived/worked: Hong Kong

Pronouns: She/her

CV:

Havas, Hong Kong, senior social media manager, 2022-present
What If Events, Hong Kong, project manager, 2018-2021

1. How did you end up being a creative?

My parents are creatives, so I guess it’s in my genes. They met decades ago when they started their careers at Ogilvy. My childhood consisted of creative past times such as painting, dancing, and pottery. As I grew older I thought I wanted to be a scientist (very different, I know). I double majored in molecular biology and psychology at university. Funnily enough, creative work always found its way back to me. After graduation, I worked in event management for luxury brands for a few years before moving into my current role in social media.

2. What's your favourite piece of work in your portfolio?

This year Havas Social managed social media for the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens. The energy—both offline and online—was electric, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the results. Over the course of three days on-site at the event, we engaged with fans by activating Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. We created over 700 posts, including reels and stories, which led to a 70% increase in engagement compared to the previous year.

3. What's your favourite piece of work created by someone else?

Spotify Wrapped. Every December you’re bound to see people sharing their Spotify Wrapped on socials! This genius marketing strategy features personalisation and share-ability. Spotify users are not only engaged on a personal level through understanding their listening habits, but are also encouraged to become brand ambassadors.

4. What's on your bucket list?

My bucket list is long and will keep growing but here are some honorable mentions: Watch a Spanish bullfight, be a cameo in a reality TV show (something like Hell’s Kitchen), ride the Gelmerbahn in Switzerland, and go truffle-hunting.

5. Who's open your dream dinner guest list?

Taylor Swift. Masterful storyteller and entertainer aside, she is also a marketing genius.

6. Tell us about an artist (any medium) that we've never probably heard of?

I recently bought a print from Alison Friend, a British artist. She paints animals doing human things with adorable expressions on their faces. Definitely on my bucket list to get an original painting one day.

7. What's your favourite GIF/meme, and why?

Me internally all the time:

Fun fact, the original image “Side Eyeing Chloe” was sold as an NFT in 2021 for US$74,000 to a music production company.

8. What app could you absolutely not live without?

Instagram is my double-edged sword. It’s a place where I find creative inspiration and keep up-to-date with current events and trends. Yet it’s the source of my doomscrolling and a pitfall for productivity. I’m still finding the right balance.

9. What makes you really happy?

Watching people connect and laugh without a care in the world. Positive emotions are extremely contagious!

10. Cat person or dog person?

I used to be a cat person until I realised they all hate me—certified dog lover now. I have two (Damien and Maisie) and they’re my everything!

Maisie (L) and Damien (R).

11. Extrovert or introvert?

Extrovertmy MBTI is ENFJ. Whether I’ve just met you or have known you for 10 years, I don’t shy away from heavier conversation topics.
