Several app researchers and users report seeing the free version of X’s AI chatbot, Grok, being made available to people across certain regions.

X to rival ChatGPT by testing a free version of its AI chatbot

Elon Musk’s X is reportedly testing a free version of its AI chatbot Grok – built by another company of his, xAI – to users in select regions, according to reports from several app researchers and users.

Researcher Swak on X made a breaking announcement on the platform about the chatbot becoming available to free users with some limitations in regions such as New Zealand.

xAI launched Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini – a small but capable sibling of Grok-2 – in August this year with superior reasoning, real-time capabilities, and image generation capacities on the X platform.

The company also gave the model the ability to understand images late last month. To access the chatbot, X accounts need to be at least seven days old and have a phone number linked to them.

Users can ask Grok-2 up to 10 questions every two hours; Grok-2 mini 20 questions every two hours; and analyse up to three images per day.

Until now, the features have only been available to premium and premium+ users, but by making it available to all users for free, X has a chance to compete with other AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini.
