Paul, who was previously global strategy director at MEC, will be responsible for a range of functions relating to UM’s strategy and communications planning including creative output, intellectual property development and thought leadership, according to a statement from the agency.

A key part of Paul’s role will involve developing the agency’s strategic framework, 'Curiosity’, by partnering with companies within the Interpublic Group (IPG) network.

Paul will report to UM Japan managing director Kaoru Matsui and IPG Mediabrands’ regional chief strategy officer Steve Blakeman. Blakeman described him as “a great example of the divergent thinkers” within the Mediabrands organisation.

Paul has worked in the media industry for over 15 years with clients such as Star Alliance, Barclays Capital and Paramount Pictures.
