SPENA’s ONE HD ascends to top spot among Malaysian HD channels

KUALA LUMPUR – In a mere four months, SPE Networks – Asia’s (SPENA) ONE HD has established itself as the leading high-definition (HD) channel in Malaysia, beating out 11 other such channels in the Astro network.

The channel recorded full-day ratings that were four times higher than those of its closest competitor on Astro. Furthermore, Astro subscribers viewed ONE HD for an average of almost two hours daily, the second-longest duration among the 125 channels available on the Malaysian pay-TV platform, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research Malaysia.

ONE HD is the first Asian entertainment channel from SPE Networks – Asia, which is also home to cable channels AXN, Animax and Sony Entertainment Television. SPENA launched ONE HD back in October 2010, marking the firm’s first venture into offering Asian general entertainment.

“ONE HD has performed phenomenally and Malaysian viewers have lapped up Korean entertainment, much like audiences all over the world,” commented Ang Hui Keng, senior vice-president of business operations at SPENA, referring to the primary driver behind the channel’s success. “We are very encouraged by ONE HD’s popularity, and we are working towards expanding our Korean offering to more Asian markets over the next two years.”

Korean dramas banner the programming line-up, a majority of which is supplied by Seoul-based Korean content supplier and broadcaster SBS. ONE HD also features K-pop variety, reality and music shows.
