ESPN Star Sports renews broadcast rights for Major League Baseball till 2013

SINGAPORE - ESPN Star Sports (ESS) will retain broadcast of the Major League Baseball (MLB) tournament across key Asian markets for the next four years until the 2013 season.

Baseball fans can look forward to one MLB game every day on ESS while viewers in Taiwan will be able to catch up to 10 regular season games live each week.

Viewers in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia will be able to watch up to seven live games per week on its networks from 21 June.

On the broadcast of MLB, Manu Sawhney, MD of ESPN STAR Sports, said: “This renewal reinforces our longstanding relationship with MLB since its first broadcast on our network in 1995.”

He added: “Highlighted by the growing passion for this sport in Asia, we are pleased to showcase more MLB games than ever before, especially at a time when Asian players are enjoying unprecedented success with some of the best teams in MLB.”

Paul Archey, SVP of international business operations for MLB, said: “We have seen the popularity of MLB increase in Asia over the past decade and we are proud to be working with an organisation that is committed to the growing interest in baseball.”

In recent times, the MLB has seen a growing pool of Asian players including Japan’s Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki; South Korea’s Chan Ho Park and Shin Soo Choo as well as Taiwan’s Chien-Ming Wang and Hong-Chi Kuo.
