Glaxosmithkline set out to break a Guinness World Record with the largest teacup to revitalise malt beverage brand Viva in Sri Lanka.

Background

According to the Lanka Market Research Bureau, over 80 per cent of malt drinkers drink their tea with the addition of a malt supplement in Sri Lanka.

Glaxosmithkline (GSK) set out to relaunch the Viva brand, a milk, wheat and malted barley drink.

Aim

GSK’s Viva partnered with creative agency JWT Colombo to set a Guinness World Record for constructing the world’s largest teacup.

Execution

The agency spent two months planning and manufacturing the teacup designed with 16 gauges and one inch thick steel. Six 2,000 wattage heaters and a stirrer powered by motors and generators were installed to keep the tea warm.

The completed Viva teacup measured 10 feet high by eight feet wide to hold an estimated 4,000 liters of water (1,000 gallons). JWT mixed a Viva drink in the cup consisting of 64kg tea, 160kg sugar and 875kg Viva, the equivalent of 32,000 cups of tea.

The tea started boiling at 3am on 9 October and took three hours to complete.

Result

The previous record was held by the Health Centre in Fort Scott, Kansas, USA, on 26 September 2009. The cup takes 3,000 liters, which is 660 gallons of tea.

Viva in Sri Lanka broke the record at 10am on 9 October.
