Ad Nut

Would you, could you in a Christmas ad?

THE WORK: 'The miracle ham' for Aldi Australia by BMF.

If you like ham (the regular kind, not the green kind served with green eggs), then you may enjoy this odd holiday tale about a swine-hock that keeps on giving, from Aldi Australia and BMF.

Oh, buy the way, it's time for Christmas ads again. And yes, the pun on "buy" is intended. After all, you only have seven and a half weeks, so you'd better get busy with your consumering!*

Anyway, as Christmas ads go, this one is not bad. It's so quirky that it's basically all quirk, but Ad Nut believes that's better than an ad that tries, and spectacularly fails, to make us cry—like one particularly egregious abomination from last year (see "Singtel, you owe Frank Capra an apology").

The campaign launched yesterday and includes TV, online video, radio, OOH, catalogue, in-store POS, website and social. It will also include a series of retail ads about specific products.

Unfortunately, the campaign does not mean that Aldi will actually be selling a line of automatically replenishing foodstuffs. Too bad, because Ad Nut was all set to splurge on a bottomless can of roasted cashews.

* Ad Nut wasn't always so cynical about Christmas ads. For a while, Ad Nut overdosed on the seasonal sentiment (see "Holi-dazed: Ad Nut's ridiculously long Christmas-ad review" and "Holi-dazed II: Ad Nut's ridiculously long 2017 Christmas-ad review"). But an intervention by dear friends convinced Ad Nut that mainlining holiday cheer to such an obsessive degree was not entirely healthy. So last year Ad Nut limited coverage to just a handful of notable ads from Asia, and has pledged to do the same this year. If you absolutely must have more Christmas ads in your life, follow the ad nuts at Campaign in the UK, where Christmas advertising is a blood sport.

Ad Nut is a surprisingly literate woodland creature that for unknown reasons has an unhealthy obsession with advertising.
