China goes on PR push with video ads in New York's Times Square

NEW YORK CITY - The Middle Kingdom is calling on Americans to see it in a whole new light, with billboard ads running a short film in New York City's Times Square.

The film, titled simply as "Shanghai" runs for four and a half minutes, and features scenes of Shanghai in the morning, noon, and night - with synchronised broadcasts corresponding to New York's local times of the day.

Produced by the Shanghai Municipal Government's news office and the Xinhua News Agency, the film showcases the Bund, Xintiandi, Shikumen, Suzhou River, and other Shanghainese landmarks.

This isn’t the only way China is promoting itself as a tourist destination in the US.

Earlier this month, Xinhua News Agency started China's PR push with an ad on the same Times Square billboard, following the recent move of its North American head office to New York’s Broadway.

Sino-American relations have always been frosty. Even as China's economy has boomed, the US has maintained its concerns over alleged currency manipulation; while China has banned US-based social media networks including Twitter and Facebook.
