Giant made-in-Singapore droids wrap up 21-city tour

Arcade Singapore and Untitled Project created a set of four 2.5-metre droids that roamed and entertained at 21 Heineken events around Asia.

Four massive robots made for Heineken by Arcade Singapore and Untitled Project have recently completed a 21-event tour through China, Mongolia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea.

The 'Sonic droids' roamed around the events entertaining partygoers with specific abilities:

  • 'Plasma' sought out groups of Heineken drinkers with a search beam and rewarded them with a personal light show.
  • 'Pressure' shot out smoke rings.
  • 'Sub-Zero' emitted chilly blasts of carbon-dioxide.
  • 'Texture' fired off a confetti cannon.

Each droid suit had a mounted camera with in-built facial recognition software to capture interactions with partiers, and images of the crowd were transmitted wirelessly from each droid to the event AV desk for display on projection screens.

The companies built two sets of the suits, which had to be weatherproofed to handle indoor and outdoor events and durable enough to withstand several months worth of appearances and air-freight. The events began in July 2016 and ran through January of this year.

Ad Nut appreciates the craft on display here, but prefers to enjoy beers in a quiet place with a few good friends. If a hulking robot appeared pointing a search beam all around the place, Ad Nut would scurry for cover fearing some kind of a Terminator situation.
