Underground Shanghai hotel plans Q4 debut

Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland will have 16 floors below ground level.

Underground Shanghai hotel plans Q4 debut

Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland is expected to launch in the fourth quarter this year, an addition to the string of luxury hotels in the bustling Chinese financial hub.

The 18-storey property covering an area of 61,000 square metres with 336 rooms was developed by the Shimao Group and managed by the Intercontinental Hotel Group.

What is interesting about the property, built on a former quarry in southwestern Shanghai, is that it extends 88 metres below ground level, with only two floors above ground. IHG said the unconventional structure defies the traditional concept of high-rises and reshapes the relationship between the city and nature.

The company envisions the property asa must-visit destination in Shanghai. However, the local press has already nicknamed it the 'deep pit hotel'.
