MySpace China lays off two thirds of employees

BEIJING – MySpace China has laid off over 30 of its employees, being the first branch to suffer from a global underperformance, according to Chinese media reports.

Among those left are Wei Lai, CEO of MySpace China, and Zhenjian Lei, the company's VP for operations.

Gao Qunyao, acting board chairman, has taken over the CEO role for the time being.

The news has been confirmed by Luo Peng, marketing and communications director.

Earlier this week, it was reported that MySpace plans to lay off 550 to 600 employees globally.

Once the top social networking destination, MySpace has been steadily losing users over the past couple of years following the rising success of sites like Facebook and Twitter.

In China, Myspace.cn never managed to break through to the top tier of social networking sites in a fiercely competitive market that involves most of the country's internet giants.
