During his term of service at the White House, Lockhart was chief spokesman and senior adviser to Clinton. He also handled the press during the former US President's impeachment trial.

Lockhart is the founding partner and managing director of The Glover Park Group, a public relations and political strategy firm. A veteran of multiple political campaigns, Lockhart was adviser to Senator John Kerry during his presidential bid in 2004, and held senior roles with the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign and in 1980 was regional press coordinator for President Carter's failed reelection bid.

According to the New York Times, earlier this year, Facebook held talks about a similar position with Robert Gibbs, current President Barack Obama's former press secretary. However the talks did not lead to any appointment.
