Sometimes it's because they are hilarious. Sometimes it's because they make you feel unexpected emotion. Sometimes it's because the idea is just plain cool. Some ads simply have the 'x' factor—and will come up time and again when you ask people for their Cannes Lions contenders.

Certain work from Asia Pacific this year stands out as metal-winning material. For example, four of the six agency executives we approached in Australia/New Zealand told us that 'Meet Graham', Clemenger BBDO Melbourne's misshapen illustration of the dangers of high-speed road crashes, was among their top picks for an award. In Southeast Asia, three of our four interviewees confessed they'd been seduced by the bright lights of Nike's 'Unlimited Stadium' by BBH Singapore, and Japanese agency folk named Sony Playstation's 'Gravity Cat' by Hakuhodo as "pure wow".

We have two reporters attending the festival next week and will have constant updates on the award winners as they're announced. Tune into campaignasia.com/cannes2017.
