Stephen Mangham clarifies departure

JAKARTA – Stephen Mangham says his departure from Ogilvy & Mather Indonesia was entirely of his own volition as agreement on terms could not be reached.

Speaking exclusively to Campaign, Mangham said that discussions regarding his terms of employment reached an impasse that resulted in his resignation.

“The role outlined to me was to help Ogilvy realise the huge potential of Indonesia, as a market akin to India or China,” he said, adding that as such he anticipated terms would be commensurate with the size and importance of that market.

Mangham added that the departure of chief creative officer Gary Caulfield was entirely coincidental. “Part of my remit in Indonesia was to instigate change and bring in some heavyweight talent – including the search for Gary’s replacement – and I had started doing that."

While Mangham is being replaced in the interim by Ogilvy & Mather ASEAN president David Mayo, Mangham clarified that it he actually reported to Paul Heath, CEO Asia Pacific at Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific.

Heath was unavailable when contacted for comment on Mangham’s clarification.

Mangham had been appointed to the role of Jakarta-based group technical adviser for PT Indo Ad in late August, and had been in the role for one month.
